Azerbaijan
Overview
The establishment of the Azerbaijan–French University (UFAZ) represents a milestone in the history of international academic cooperation within the South Caucasus. Formally initiated through a 2014 agreement signed by the presidents of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the French Republic, UFAZ functions as a specialized academic vehicle designed to bridge the gap between regional industrial requirements and global scientific standards.
This ambitious project is hosted within the institutional framework of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), a legacy institution with over a century of history in engineering education, in direct partnership with a consortium of prestigious French universities led by the University of Strasbourg (Unistra).
The geopolitical and educational significance of UFAZ extends beyond mere degree granting. It serves as a laboratory for the modernization of higher education in Azerbaijan, introducing the rigorous pedagogical traditions of the French "Grandes Écoles" while maintaining a deep connection to the specific industrial landscape of the Caspian region.
The university’s development is overseen by a University Development Council and a Research Council (Tədqiqat Şurası), ensuring that its growth remains aligned with both Azerbaijani national priorities and French academic excellence. By combining the historical depth of ASOIU with the research-intensive culture of Strasbourg and the University of Rennes 1, UFAZ provides a unique transnational environment where students are prepared for a rapidly changing global economy defined by digital transformation and the energy transition.
The core value proposition of UFAZ lies in its dual-degree system. Students who successfully navigate the rigorous curriculum receive two national diplomas: one from the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) and another from either the University of Strasbourg or the University of Rennes 1, depending on the chosen specialty.
Language of Instruction: Exclusively English (enhances global mobility and integration of French professors).
Foundation Year (FY): An intensive preparatory bridge focusing on Mathematics, Science, English, and French language training.
Multilingual Profile: While technical sciences are in English, French is a mandatory second language, making graduates attractive to European multinational corporations.
The undergraduate portfolio at UFAZ focuses on high-demand scientific and engineering disciplines designed to provide a blend of deep theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
