Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), located in Tbilisi, Georgia, is one of the leading institutions for medical education in the Caucasus region. Founded in 1918, it is the oldest university in Georgia and has maintained a strong reputation for academic excellence. The Faculty of Medicine at TSU offers a globally recognized Medical Doctor (MD) program, attracting both local and international students.

History of Medicine at TSU

The Faculty of Medicine was first established in 1919, a year after the university’s founding, but the program was discontinued in 1930 due to political and structural changes. Medical education was revived in 1994, and in 2011, the MD program received international accreditation from organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), and the European Medical Council, making the degree widely accepted for practice worldwide.

MD Program Structure

The MD program at TSU is a 6-year course, equivalent to an MBBS degree in many countries, and is taught entirely in English, making it accessible to international students. The curriculum follows international standards and is divided into three main phases:

• Years 1–2: Basic Sciences – Focus on foundational subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and medical physics to build a strong scientific base.

• Year 3: Pre-Clinical Studies – Bridges theory and practice, covering pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology, emphasizing the understanding of disease mechanisms.

• Years 4–6: Clinical Studies – Hands-on clinical rotations in affiliated hospitals, covering specialties including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics. This phase includes practical training and an internship to develop real-world skills.

The program totals 360 ECTS credits and emphasizes an integrated approach, combining basic sciences, clinical skills, and social disciplines such as public health and medical ethics. Students are trained in critical thinking, communication, and research, preparing them for clinical practice and academic careers globally.
