Indian and Pakistani students applying to the BDS programme at Azerbaijan Medical Universityhave one structural advantage over most international applicants: the foundation year is optional. Pass a $100 online interview in Biology, Chemistry, and English, and you enter Year 1 directly — in either September or February — graduating in five years with $30,100 in total tuition.
AMU is the only government medical university in Azerbaijan. Its dental faculty has operated as a dedicated scientific and clinical centre since 1954, and the university follows the ECTS credit system, which makes the degree transferable and recognised across multiple global licensing frameworks.
When you factor in accommodation and living expenses, the five-year all-in cost is approximately ₹45–49 lakhs or PKR 1.50–1.65 crore — less than the tuition alone at many Indian and Pakistani private dental colleges, before their capitation fees are added.
For most international students, the foundation year at AMU is mandatory — a $5,000 preparatory year before the five-year BDS programme begins. Indian and Pakistani students are the exception. After passing a $100 online interview, they enter Year 1 directly. The table below confirms which nationalities qualify.
Nationality | Foundation Year | Direct BDS Entry | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
India | Optional ($5,000) | Sept or Feb | Pass $100 interview |
Pakistan | Optional ($5,000) | Sept or Feb | Pass $100 interview |
Arab nationalities | Mandatory ($5,000) | N/A | N/A |
Other international | Mandatory ($5,000) | N/A | N/A |
Skipping the foundation year saves one full year and $5,000. The only condition is passing the entry interview. Edubrink provides structured mock interview preparation sessions covering Biology, Chemistry, English, and motivation questions.
Fee: $100 USD, non-refundable, paid directly to AMU before the interview.
Format: Online via Zoom or Skype. In-person sessions are available if you are already in Baku.
Duration: 15–30 minutes.
Biology: Dental anatomy, cell structure, head and neck systems, and genetics. Strictly at Class 12 / A-Level / FSc level — no postgraduate knowledge is expected.
Chemistry: Organic reactions and basic chemical bonding.
English: Spoken communication assessment. No IELTS score is required. The panel looks for clear, confident expression — not a native accent.
Motivation: Be ready to explain why you chose dentistry, why you want to study at AMU, and what your career plan looks like after graduation.
If you do not pass: The university's pathway is the $5,000 foundation year, after which you enter BDS Year 1 on the same curriculum as direct-entry students. The $100 fee is non-refundable regardless of outcome.
AMU's tuition is set by the Azerbaijani state, not by a private board. That means it does not fluctuate based on enrolment demand or institutional quotas. The schedule below is what you will pay. There are no additional material fees, development charges, or management quota premiums.

AMU's dentistry programme holds three independent accreditations that are directly relevant to graduates practising in India, Pakistan, and the Gulf. The table below shows each body, its current status, and what it means for your licensing pathway after graduation.
Body | Status | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
IAAR (code 070104) | 2022–2027 | Dentistry specifically accredited |
WFME | IAAR Recognised | Global medical education standards |
WHO (WDOMS) | Listed | Required by DCI and PMDC |
Verify independently: IAAR accredited organisations registry · WHO World Directory of Medical Schools · WFME recognition status
If you are still comparing dentistry with general medicine at the same university, you can also review Medicine at Azerbaijan Medical University to understand the difference in study duration, tuition structure, clinical training, and admission requirements.
AMU satisfies the two accreditation conditions the DCI requires for a foreign dental graduate to be eligible for registration: WHO listing (WDOMS) and IAAR/WFME recognition.
To register as a dentist in India after graduating from AMU, you must complete four steps in order:
Qualify NEET-UG before leaving India. This is a legal requirement. Students who depart without a valid NEET-UG qualification are not eligible to sit the DCI screening exam on return — this cannot be remedied retrospectively.
Pass the DCI Foreign Dental Graduate Screening Test (FDST) after graduation. This two-part exam tests the clinical knowledge acquired during your degree. AMU's English-medium curriculum covers the subject areas the FDST examines.
Complete a 12-month internship at a DCI-recognised hospital in India after passing the FDST.
Apply for DCI registration upon completing the internship.
Note: DCI policy on foreign dental graduates has been updated multiple times. Do not rely on information from previous intake years. Edubrink confirms the current regulatory position for your specific graduation year before your application is submitted.
To practise dentistry in Pakistan after graduating from AMU, you must complete four steps in sequence:
MDCAT score of at least 50% before applying to AMU. This is a PMDC requirement, not a university requirement.
Obtain a PMDC Student Registration Certificate (NOC) before leaving Pakistan. You must register on the PMDC portal and receive this certificate before departing for Baku. Arriving in Azerbaijan without it creates a compliance problem that cannot be resolved after the fact.
Pass the National Registration Examination (NRE) after graduation — Step 1 (Theory) and Step 2 (Clinical) — in Pakistan.
Complete a 12-month House Job at a PMDC-recognised hospital after passing the NRE.
Note: PMDC equivalence is not automatic. Edubrink confirms compliance with current PMDC Act 2022 regulations before your application is finalised — not after you arrive in Baku.
For more detail on how AMU degrees are recognised in the UAE and Gulf, read our guide: Azerbaijan Medical University UAE Recognition 2026.
AMU graduates intending to practise in the Gulf must obtain equivalency through the relevant health authority. AMU's WHO listing and WFME/IAAR accreditation satisfy the eligibility condition for the following processes:
Country | Authority | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
UAE — Dubai | Dubai Health Authority (DHA) | Dataflow credential verification + DHA licensing exam |
UAE — Abu Dhabi | Department of Health (DOH) | Dataflow credential verification + DOH licensing exam |
Saudi Arabia | Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCHS) | Equivalency assessment + SCHS licensing exam |
Qatar | Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP) | Credential verification + licensing exam |
Processing timelines and exam structures vary by authority and are updated periodically. For current guidance specific to your target country, contact Edubrink before you enrol.
The BDS curriculum at Azerbaijan Medical University uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to ensure your degree is portable globally.
Year | Phase | Key Subjects |
|---|---|---|
1 | Pre-Clinical | Anatomy (head & neck), Biochemistry, Histology, Medical Latin |
2 | Pre-Clinical Advanced | Physiology, Microbiology, Dental Materials, Pharmacology |
3 | Clinical Start | Oral Pathology, Radiology, Conservative intro, rotations begin |
4 | Clinical Core | Conservative (restorative), Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics |
5 | Clinical Intensive | All 9 departments, OMFS, Implantology, Research, Graduation |
Azerbaijan Medical University's Educational-Dental Clinic, founded in 2002, is a fully operational patient-facing facility — not a simulation lab. It runs nine active departments: Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Implantology, Periodontics, Radiology, and a dedicated Dental Laboratory.
From Year 3, you treat real patients under direct faculty supervision. By Year 5, your rotation covers all nine departments, including complex surgical and reconstructive cases. This clinical depth is directly relevant to the subject areas covered in the DCI FDST and PMDC NRE examinations.
Baku is a compact, walkable city with a well-developed metro system and a significant international student population. For Indian and Pakistani students, two practical factors matter most: food and safety.
AMU's dental faculty has over 310 international students, with an established Indian and Pakistani student community. Study groups, peer mentoring, and senior networks are an active part of student life — particularly useful for exam preparation and clinical rotation support.
Azerbaijan has a predominantly Muslim population, which means halal food is available as the default in campus canteens and local restaurants throughout Baku. Indian and Pakistani cuisine is available in the Nasimi district near the university.
Azerbaijan is ranked #2 globally for safety by Gallup, with a 95/100 score for residents feeling safe walking at night. The AMU campus is monitored 24/7 by security and CCTV. There are separate, secure wings for male and female students in the dormitories.
Obtaining an Azerbaijan student visa is straightforward for Indian and Pakistani applicants. No embassy visit is required for the initial entry. The e-visa is applied for online at evisa.gov.az and processed within 3–5 business days.
Student Location | Visa Method | Cost (USD) | Processing |
|---|---|---|---|
India | e-Visa via evisa.gov.az | ~$26–30 | 3 business days |
Pakistan | e-Visa via evisa.gov.az | ~$26–30 | 3 business days |
UAE Residents | e-Visa OR UAE Consulate | ~$25–30 | 3–10 working days |
If you have more than 6 months of validity remaining on your UAE residence visa, you may qualify for a 30-day visa on arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. However, we strongly recommend obtaining the Azerbaijan e-visa in advance to avoid complications with the subsequent student Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) registration process.
Register with the State Migration Office within 15 days of arrival.
The university initiates your student Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) application.
The TRP is issued annually and must be renewed each academic year.
Working is not permitted on a student visa in Azerbaijan.
Edubrink is not a traditional education agency. It is a platform that helps students compare universities, verify recognition, and make informed decisions — before committing to anything.
Use the Edubrink platform to compare the BDS programme at AMU against other universities, countries, and tuition structures. See fee breakdowns, duration, language of instruction, and licensing recognition side by side — without speaking to a sales consultant first.
Before you apply anywhere, confirm that the degree will be recognised in the country where you intend to practise. For AMU dentistry, Edubrink verifies the current DCI (India), PMDC (Pakistan), or Gulf authority requirements for your specific graduation year — not based on older data that may no longer apply.
The $100 AMU interview is the only gate between you and direct BDS entry. Edubrink provides structured preparation sessions covering the exact subject areas and question formats the AMU admissions committee uses.
Once you decide to proceed, Edubrink coordinates the application, offer letter, and e-visa process. Dormitory availability is confirmed at this stage — spaces are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
